Suicide leaves a lot of unanswered questions and what ifs in the minds of family members that they'll never be able to resolve. it's not the same as is someone dies untimely of illness or an accident. The memory of that person looms over them forever. Their families get better to an extent but they're never the same. I've known several people who have committed suicide so maybe I'm a little less forgiving about it as I've seen the aftermath of a suicide. Emotions surrounding death are pretty fucking weird.

It means you recognize what happened for what it is. It doesn't mean you hate them for it, it doesn't mean you don't feel sad for them and for their families. You can feel sad and have empathy for the person who committed suicide, while still being upset with them for making what amounts to a very selfish decision - even if it was borne out of depression and the like. Although it is frequently brought on by depression or other mental illness, they DID leave their families, and not in an honorable sense like a firefighter passing during service. Yes it's tremendously sad and terrible that this happened, but the feelings you described are common and normal when suicides occur, especially those in which people leave children behind. So let me elaborate a bit, as this has happened to several friends and family members of mine. Maybe from people that haven't experienced something like this close to them.
